Edna LaRue (Brockway) Garvin, maternal grandmother of James B. Bishop, Jr., wrote in the above book, “Grandpa Jenkins spent some time with us about 1899 & 1900. I knew all of his children – my aunts & uncles – except W. H., mother’s ‘bro. Will.’ About 1902 0r 1903 she and Aunt Maggie Jenkins had not heard from him for a long time – wrote to Postmaster at Joplin, Mo. from where they had last heard – no information. About 1958 I had a letter from my brother, enclosing a card from someone in Kansas City, Mo. asking if he were a son of the Brockway who married Kathryn Jenkins. He sent it to me asking me to answer which I did, and received a letter very shortly. The writer was a daughter-in-law of my uncle Will Jenkins, mother’s lost brother, who had lived for years in Mo. & Kans. and died April 1, 1951 – just 5 mo. & a few days before mother.”

This above person is interesting since Wm. B. Jenkins married an Owings and lived IL, probably Quincy, Adams Co.; I presume that this is their son – William H. William married Appalona BEE. Appalona died 1942 in McCune, , KS ^[9]year and place of death established from Nelle Jenkins’s letter of 1958 to Edna LaRue (Brockway) Garvin which is in possession of James B. BISHOP, Jr.. Nelle Jenkins letter of 1958 states, ” Dad and Mother Jenkins lived in Cherokee, Kansas, where the children were born. Lona, as mother J. was called, died in 1942 at the home of their daughter Clara who lived at McCune, Kansas at the time.”

She died 5 Sep 1951 in Joliet, Will, IL and was buried 9 Sep 1951 in Joliet, Will, IL, Elmhurst Cem. ^[10]Entered 7/14/92 by James B. Bishop, Jr. from family records. Buried in Elmhurst Cemetery. Place of birth could have been Indiana, not Illinois. Pinneo’s had her date of birth as 21 June 1866. Kathryn married Jesse Wilson BROCKWAY, son of James Bird BROCKWAY and Catherine FLINT, on 27 Jul 1892 in Chicago, Cook, IL. Jesse was born 1 Dec 1859 in Denmark, Lee, Iowa. He died 7 Oct 1933 in Joliet, Will, IL and was buried 9 Oct 1933 in Joliet, Will, IL. ^[11]Entered 7/14/92 by James B. Bishop, Jr. from family records. Went to Joliet, IL in July 1891.

Buried in Elmhurst Cemetery; Diary of William Freeman Garvin, husband of Edna LaRue BROCKWAY, daughter of Jesse Wilson BROCKWAY: entry of Saturday, 7 Oct. 1933, “Dad passed away this morning at 7:53.” Diary entry of Monday Oct. 9,1933, “Dad’s funeral this afternoon at 2:30 – Templers in charge.”

These entries followed previous ones detailing that William Freeman Garvin and Edna BROCKWAY GARVIN earlier received a call at their home in Tulsa, OK, telling them that Edna’s Dad was very sick and they better come. They traveled to Joliet, Will, IL. and remained there until after the funeral.

Written information about Jesse Wilson Brockway from a newspaper in Joliet, Will Co., IL read as follows: “Jessie W. Brockway is now filling the responsible position of general foreman of the Illinois Steel Company at Joliet. His connection with this company covers a period of seventeen years, during which time he has made rapid and substantial advancement, having won promotion until he now fills a prominent place in the industrial interests of this city. Mr. Brockway was born in Lee County, Iowa, in 1859, a son of James and Catherine (Flint) Brockway, both of whom were born in Ohio.”

“The son (Jesse, sic.) was reared to farming pursuits, assisting his father in the various tasks of the fields, and in the common schools he acquired his education. He then learned the blacksmith trade at Kingston, Iowa, where he served a two years’ apprenticeship after which he was employed in the Murray Iron Works, Burlington, Iowa, serving a three year’s apprenticeship as a machinist. Later he worked in the Chicago, Burlington (IA), & Quincy (IL) shops, where he was employed as machinist for two years subsequent to learning the trade. Coming to Joliet, he worked as a journeyman in the machine shops of the Illinois Steel Company for fourteen years, during which time he was promoted from one position to another, while eleven years ago he was made night foreman of the machine shop. He has charge of the entire department, which employs about one hundred and forty men, many of whom are among the most expert manufacturers of tools for the splice mill, merchant mill, and in addition, a general repair work is done in connection with the machinery of the shops. The building is eighty by one hundred and forty feet and is equipped with two electric cranes running the entire length of the building. The long experience of Mr. Brockway in connection with the machinist’s trade well qualifies him for the arduous and responsible duties which devolve upon him, and he is discharging his duties with entire satisfaction to the company.”

“Mr. Brockway was married in Chicago, in 1892, to Miss Katy Jenkins, who was born in Quincy, Illinois, and they have become the parents of five children:
Edna, Ruth, Esther, Elmer, and Mildred. Mr. Brockway is a republican in his political views and affiliations and is identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Masonic fraternity, belonging to the lodge, chapter and council, and in these connections commands the good will and esteem of his fraternal brethren.”

Jesse Wilson Brockway was the father of my maternal grandmother, Edna LaRue BROCKWAY who married William Freeman GARVIN. My grandmother’s wedding journal, which I have in my possession, revealed that she and my grandfather returned to Iowa to visit relatives for their honeymoon. I also have
many hard-backed photos (cabinet style) of them and other family (some of whom are not identified, and I am still trying to ID them). The photos I have are divided into two groups by cities where the photographic studios were located – Burlington, IA, and Quincy, IL. It is probable that Jesse’s middle name (WILSON) came from his maternal grandmother’s surname, and that he is the grandson of Titus Brockway and Nancy Wilson.

A diary of Jesse Wilson Brockway in possession of Jim Bishop (James Bashford Bishop, Jr.) was among his mother’s genealogy information. His mother no doubt received from her mother Edna LaRue (Brockway ) Garvin . Jesse Wilson was born 12/01/1859, Denmark, Lee Co., Iowa; died 10/07/1933, Joliet, IL. His wife was Kathryn Jane Jenkins, born 06/21/1866, Rushville, IL; died 09/05/1951, Joliet, IL.

An entry on 8/30/1938, read, “Aunt Maggie’s Funeral at Faith (Faith Tabernacle, Tulsa, the church granddad Garvin pastored for about 27 years).”
