Obituary of Antoinett A. Ostermiller

Mrs. Antoinett A. Ostermiller, 75, of 2048 Oak died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 1969) at 5 a.m. in St Mary Hospital where she had been a patient since Sept 11.  Mrs. Ostermiller was born March 10, 1894, in Quincy, the daughter of Bernard J. and Mary Blohm Broeker. She was married to Joseph H. Ostermiller June 29, 1915, in St. Francis Catholic Church. She was a member of the Ladies of St. Francis.

Surviving is a daughter, Miss Mary Ann Ostermiller of Quincy; five sons, Raymond of Terre Haute, Ind., Robert of Waukegan, and Virgil, Eugene and Donald of Quincy; three sisters-in-law, Miss Irene Ostermiller, Mrs. Helen Bexten and Mrs. Frances Broeker of Quincy; 12 grandchildren and a great grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and John Broeker, and a grandson, Michael Ostermiller. Services will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Bauer Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in St Francis Church with the Rev. Clarence Chambers, OFM officiating. Obituary of Donald Ostermiller

Donald G. Ostermiller, 76, of 827 Santa Maria, died at 6:45 a.m. Thursday (May 4, 2000) in Blessing Hospital.

Born June 12, 1923, in Quincy, Mr. Ostermiller was a son of Joseph H. and Antoinette Broeker Ostermiller. He married Margaret “Marge” Middendorf on June 24, 1946, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salina, Kan. She died on March 25, 1990.

Mr. Ostermiller was a salesman for Prudential Life Insurance Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1984. He was a 1941 graduate of Notre Dame High School and a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. Mr. Ostermiller was a staff sergeant in the Army Chemical Corp in World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 37. Mr. Ostermiller played minor league baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Survivors include a son, William R. Ostermiller and his wife, Sarah, of Piano, Texas; two daughters, Mrs., William (Donna) Welsh of Liberty and Barbara Brink of Indianapolis; three brothers, Raymond Ostermiller and his wife, Beryl, of East Lansing, Mich., Eugene Ostermiller and his wife, Suzanne, of Camp Point, and Robert Ostermiller and his wife, Pauline, of Waukegan; a sister-in-law, Ruthe Ostermiller of Quincy; and seven grandchildren.

Mr. Ostermiller also was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Ann, Ostermiller; and a brother, Virgil Ostermiller.

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial with military rites by American Legion Post 37 will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 tonight in the funeral home with a parish prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

Obituary of Florence A. Ostermiller

Florence A, Ostermiller, 89, formerly of 1705 Lind, died at 9:32 p.m. Monday (Nov. 9, 1992) in Good Samaritan Home.

Born July 26, 1903, in Quincy, Mrs. Ostermiller was a daughter of William and Anna Feld Altgilbers. She married Oscar Ostermiller Nov. 8, 1922, in Quincy, he died Nov. 8, 1963.

Mrs. Ostermiller was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth of Quincy; a daughter, Mrs. Leo (Marilyn) Stegeman of Quincy; seven grandchildren, Donald, Paul, Martin and Kenneth Stegeman, Kevin Ostermiller and Mrs. Robert (Karen) Havermale, all of Quincy, and Ronald Stegeman of Apple Valley, Minn.; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ostermiller was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce; three brothers, Fred, Edwin and William Jr.; four sisters, Lula Mayfield, Delia Schulz, Helen Long and Anna Sears; a granddaughter, Brenda Ostermiller; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral home and at 10 a.m. in St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday morning, with a prayer service at 6.30 p.m. Friday.

Obituary of Kenneth O. Ostermiller

Kenneth O. “Ostie” Ostermiller 70, of 2131 Harrison, a retired employee of the Quincy Water Works died at 4 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 10, 1996) in Blessing Hospital.

He was born in Quincy June 30 1925, a son of Oscar and Florence Altgilbers Ostermiller He married Virginia “Punkin” Tucker June 26, 1948. in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Quincy, She survives.

Mr. Ostermiller served in the Navy during World War II. He was employed by the Quincy Water Works for 35 years, retiring as assistant chief of the Filter Plant in 1983.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Illinois League of Municipal Employees and American Legion Post 37. For many years he was a member of the Moose lodge and was secretary of the Monday Night Turner Hall Bowling Team. He was an avid Chicago Cub baseball fan and for many years was an avid softball player. He also bowled and played horseshoes.

Survivors also include a son, Kevin K. Ostermiller of Quincy, a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Karen) Havermale of Quincy; six grandchildren, Missy, Chris and David Havermale and Jackie, Kevin and Matthew Ostermiller all of Quincy, and a sister Mrs. Leo (Marilyn) Stegeman of Quincy.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Brenda Ostermiller; sister Joy Ostermiller and a granddaughter Lisa Ostermiller.

Services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church by the Rev. Michael Kuse. Burial with military rites by American Legion Post 37 will be in Calvary Cemetery

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday and until time of services Saturday in the funeral home. A wake will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Funeral home.

Obituary of Helen Bexten

Helen H. Bexten, 95, of the Good Samaritan Home, died at 11:55 p.m. Saturday (May 30, 1992) in the home where she had lived for the past 20 years.

Born March 21, 1897, in Quincy, Mrs. Bexten was a daughter of Henry and Anna Terwische Ostermiller. She married H. Everett Bexten May 8, 1929, in Springfield. He died Jan. 31, 1930. Mrs. Bexten was secretary at Western Catholic Union Insurance Co. for 47 years, serving under four presidents. She retired April 30, 1962. She attended Gem City Business College and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Good Samaritan Home Auxiliary, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, St. Barbara Branch 203 of WCU, and Ladies of Charity.

Survivors include four nephews, Raymond Ostermiller of Terre Haute, Ind., Eugene Ostermiller of Camp Point, Robert Ostermiller of Waukegan and Donald Ostermiller of Quincy; a niece, Mary Ann Ostermiller of Quincy; 10 great-nieces and great- nephews; and 13 great-great- nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bexten was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph H. and Frank Ostermiller; two sisters, Clara and Irene Ostermiller; and a nephew, Virgil R. Ostermiller; a great-nephew; and a great-great-niece.

Services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and until time of services Wednesday in the funeral home with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Margaret J. “Marge” Ostermiller, 66, of 827 Santa Maria Drive died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday March 25, 1990 in Blessing Hospital.

Mrs. Ostermiller was born March 29, 1923 in Quincy, a daughter of Raymond and Elizabeth Fox Middendorf. She married  Donald G. Ostermiller June 24, 1946 in Scared Heart Catholic Church in Salina, Kan.

Mrs. Ostermiller was graduate of the Quincy High School and was a member of St Francis Catholic Church and Ladies of St. Francis.

Survivors include a son, Bill Ostermiller of Dallas; two daughters, Mrs. William (Donna) Welsh of Liberty, and Mrs. Tom (Barbara) Brink of Indianapolis; a brother, Neal Middendorf; seven grandchildren, Becky, Tom, and Jon Welsh, all of Liberty, and David, Carrie, Todd and Melissa Brink, all of Indianapolis.

Service will be conducted  at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. in St Francis Catholic Church by the Rev. Eugene Middendorf, OFM. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Mary Ann Ostermiller, 75, of 2048 Oak, died at 4:45 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 10, 2000) in her home.

Born Aug. 4, 1924, in Quincy Miss Ostermiller was a daughter of Joseph and Antoinette Broeker  Ostermiller. She had been employed by Western Catholic Union for 28 years, retiring in 1992. She attended Quincy High School and Gem City Business College.

Miss Ostermiller was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. She was secretary of the Western Catholic Union League, and a member of the Ladies of Charity and the Ladies of St. Francis.

Survivors include four brothers; Raymond Ostermiller and his wife; Beryle, of East Lansing, Mich., Eugene Ostermiller and his wife, Suzanne, of Camp Point, Donald Ostermiller of Quincy, and Robert Ostermiller and his wife, Pauline, of Waukegan; a sister-in-law, Ruth Ostermiller of Quincy; eight nieces and nephews, Kenneth Ostermiller and his wife, Helen, of Seville, Ohio, Karen Ostermiller of Okemus, Mich., Donna Welsh and her husband, Bill, of Liberty, Barbara Brink of Indianapolis, William Ostermiller and his wife, Sarah, of Piano, Texas, Gary Ostermiller and his wife, Cheryl, of Kenosha, Wis., Paula Niemann and her husband, Richard, of Gurnee, and James Ostermiller and his wife, Ann, of Quincy; and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Virgil Ostermiller; a nephew, Michael Ostermiller; two nieces, Susan Portsche and Joyce Geschwandner; and two sisters-in-law, Fern Ostermiller and Margaret Ostermiller.

Services will be conducted at’ 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and at’10a.m. in St. Francis Catholic Church Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Obituary of Virgil Ostermiller

Virgil R. Ostermiller, 66, of 709 N. 13th, died at 3:34 p.m. Thursday (April 3, 1986, in his home.)

Mr. Ostermiller was born in Quincy Jan. 6, 1920, a son of Joseph and Antoinette Broeker Ostermiller. He married Ruth Schutte Feb 15, 1944, in St. John Catholic Church in Quincy. She survives.

Mr. Ostermiller was Employed 40 years by Gardner-Denver Co., division of Cooper Industries, until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the St. John Catholic Church, Gardner Denver Quarter Century Club, United Commercial Travelers, St. Andrew Branch of the Western Catholic Union and St. John Leisure Club.

Mr. Ostermiller had served in the Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star in Germany in 1945.

Also surviving are a son, James, of Quincy; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Susan) Portsche of Lenexa, Kan., and Mrs. Don (Joy)  Geschwandner of Quincy; four brothers, Raymond of Terre Haute, Ind., Eugene and Donald both of Quincy, and Robert of Waukegan; a sister Mary Ann Ostermiller of Quincy; and three grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter.

Obituary of Fern Ostermiller

Mrs. Zelda (Fern) Ostermiller, 44, of 1836 Cherry, wife of Eugene A. Ostermiller, died Saturday afternoon at 2:40 in St. Mary Hospital.

Mrs. Ostermiller was born in La Belle, Mo. Dec. 25, 1920, a daughter of Robert  and Lillie Mae Scott Foust. She was married to Mr. Ostermiller in Eau Claire , Wis., June 14, 1947. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Ladies of St. Francis. She had been a longtime employee in the Block and Kuhl store and continued with Carson Pirie Scott store until she became ill a week ago.

Surviving are he husband; a son Michael J. at home; her mother of La Belle; a brother, Robert of South Bound Brook, N.J. and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father. [9]Quincy Herald Whig

Succumbs Early Tuesday

In Hospital After Long Illness

Frederick Raymond (Fritz) Ostermueller, 50, of Route 2, North Twelfth, a native or Quincy whose career as a big league baseball player from 1934 to 1948 made him nationally known, died Tuesday morning at 5:30 in St. Mary hospital.

While Quincy was always his home: he was away for long periods while playing baseball, but returned here permanently when he retired. At that time he built the Diamond motel on North Twelfth and had since operated it. Mr. Ostermueller became seriously ill a year and a half ago, but his health improved until recently. He entered the hospital Nov. 18.

Native of Quincy

Born in Quincy Sept. 15, 1907. Mr. Ostermueller was a son of George and Anna Wink Sibbing Ostermueller. His marriage to Faye Simpson of Milan, Mo., took place Aug. 16, 1927, in Cumberland, Md. Mr. Ostermueller was a member of St. Francis Catholic church and a lifetime member of Quincy lodge No. 100 of Elks. He also was a life member of the Professional Baseball Players of America. Surviving are his widow and a daughter, Sherrill, at home.  He also leaves five brothers, Albert, Leonard, Edward, George and Richard, all of Quincy a sister, Mrs. Ralph Stiefel of Litchfield, and nieces and nephews. His parents and two brothers, David and Louis, preceded him in death.

Fritz Ostermueller started his long baseball career with the Quincy Three-I team in 1928, coming to the Quincy club out of the Quincy Parish league, where he had pitched for St. John. In 1921 Ostermueller moved up to Shawnee, Okla, going to Topeka, Kas. in 1928. He was with Rochester Minn., and St. Joseph, Mo., in 1930, with Greensboro, N. C., in 1931, back to Rochester and then back to Greensboro in 1932, and broke into the big time with the Boston Red Sox in 1934. He spent the next 15 years in the majors with the Red Sox, St. Louis Browns, Brooklyn Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates, until retiring after the 1948 season.

Six Seasons With Red Sox

After six seasons with the Red Sox, Ostermueller was sold to the St. Louis Browns on Dec. 3, 1940, After pitching for the Browns in the 1941 season, he was sent to Toledo, O., in 1912, but came back to the Browns the same year. On July 15, 1943, he was traded along with Pitcher Archie McKain to the Brooklyn Dodgers for Buck Newsom. He was with Brooklyn through the 1943 season and part of the 1944 season and then went to Pittsburgh where he finished his major league career. In 15 seasons in the majors he won 159 games and lost 115. In May, 1945, Ostermueller enlisted in the navy and was discharged the following July. [10]Quincy Herald Whig

Obituary of Susan Portsche

Mrs. Susan Clare Ostermiller Portsche, 50, a Quincy native of Lenexa, Kan., died Wednesday (Jan. 10, 1996) in her home.

Mrs. Portsche was born July 27, 1945, a daughter of Virgil and Ruth Schutte Ostermiller. She married Robert L. Portsche. He survives and lives at 8323 Mullen, Lenexa, Kan. 66215.

Mrs. Portsche had lived in Colleyville, Texas, St. Paul, Minn., Portland, Ore., Galesburg, Ottumwa, Iowa, and Hannibal, Mo., before moving to Lenexa 11 years ago.

Mrs. Portsche was a sales representative for SKC Communication Products Inc. and had been a bookkeeper for various firms, including Mid-America Aerospace, Gates Rubber and Ferris Moving & Storage, both in Galesburg, Ottumwa Country Club and Moorman Credit Union in Quincy. She also wrote for the Lenexa News, was a consultant for Jafra Cosmetics in Portland and a cashier for Kroger Grocery in Hannibal.

Mrs. Portsche was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and Country Hill Book Club, both of Lenexa, the Burlington Northern Veterans Association and Johnson County Genealogical Society. She volunteered at Westside School for the Developmentally Disabled Children in Portland, worked with the elderly in St. Paul, and served on District 1 of the Community Council of St. Paul.

Survivors also include two sons, Jeffrey L. and Gregory L. Portsche, both of the home; her mother Mrs. Ruth Ostermiller of Quincy; a brother, James Ostermiller of Quincy; and a sister, Mrs. Donald (Joyce) Geschwandner of Quincy. She was preceded in death by her father.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa.

Visitation will be 6-8 tonight with a prayer service at 7:30 in the Amos Family Chapel in Lenexa. A memorial service will be held in Quincy at a later date.  Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association. [11]Quincy Herald Whig

Obituary of Joyce Geschwandner

Joyce A. Geschwandner, 48, of 2300 Northridge Drive, died at 11:25 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 14, 1996) in Blessing Hospital.

Born Jan. 13, 1948, in Quincy, Mrs. Geschwandner was a daughter of Virgil and Ruth Schutte Ostermiller. She married Donald Geschwandner June 26, 1971, in St. John Catholic Church. He survives.

Mrs. Geschwandner was a 1966 graduate of Notre Dame High School and was a receptionist at the Lincoln Douglas Beauty Salon. She was one of the organizers of Handicapped Encounter Christ and a member of St. John Catholic Church and the Western Catholic Union. Mrs. Geschwandner collected angels, was an avid reader and enjoyed crafts.

Survivors include her mother of Quincy; a son, Scott of the home; and a brother, James of Quincy.

Mrs. Geschwandner was preceded in death by her father; a daughter, Michelle, in infancy; and a sister, Sue Portsche.

Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m; Wednesday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. in St. John Catholic Church by the Rev. John Beveridge. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and until time of services Wednesday in the funeral home. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Obituary of Joseph Ostermiller

Joseph H. Ostermiller, 68 of 2048 Oak, a retired city fireman, died Monday night at 8:30 in St Mary Hospital, where he had been a patient since Saturday.

A native Quincyan, Mr. Ostermiller was a painter and decorator before serving as clerk of the Adams county selective service board No. 1 from 1940 to 1946. He joined the fire department in 1947 and retired in 1957.

Since his retirement he had served as secretary to Fire Chief Heelen.  He was a former member of Local 63, International Association of Fire Fighters, a past president of the Catholic Youth organization. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Holy Name society.

A son of Henry and Anna Terwische Ostermiller, Mr. Ostermiller was born here July 30, 1893. He was married in St. Francis Church June 29, 1915 to Antonette Broeker, who survives.  Besides his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Miss Mary Ann  Ostermiller, at home; five sons, Robert, Donald, Eugene, and Virgil of Quincy and Raymond of Battle Creek, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Bexten and Miss Irene Ostermiller of Quincy, and nephews and nieces. [13]Quincy Herald Whig
